I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you that the message of "God sends most people to hell" is not only a major flaw in Christian theology, but also can undermine Christ's message of mercy and forgiveness — unless we Christians can work hard to retire that message as obsolete and outmoded (and many of us are working hard to do just that). Every religious (and, for that matter, political or philosophical) system has internal flaws and contradictions. That's because we human beings are filled with our own internal flaws and contradictions. If we self-righteously walk away from every system that is flawed, we will end up presiding over an empire of 1. Meanwhile, I have compassion for the ordinary people who believe in God but are frightened by the doctrine of hell. Such Christians who focus on the obsolete ideas of God as a punishing and vindictive deity are like people trapped in a burning building. I want to rescue such people from their fear. Like you, I can escape the burning building in the interest of my own safety. Or I can choose like a firefighter to go straight toward the flames, hoping to help those who are trapped within.
